Having seen
the Natural inclination and its power to make one excel in life via career
success when recognized and embraced by an individual concerned, ABILITY is
also an essential factor that needs to work in harmony with natural inclination
to successfully bring an individual into his natural environment for
excellence.
Ability according to the American Heritage
(R) dictionary of English 4th edition is defined as |”the quality of
being able to do something, especially the physical, mental, financial or the
legal power to accomplish something”. It also says it is a natural or acquired
skill or talent”.
The GNU
version of the Collaborative International Dictionary of English defines it as
“the quality or state of being able; power to perform, whether physical, moral,
intellectual, conventional, or legal, capacity; skill or competence in doing;
sufficiency of strength , skill, resources etc”.
Then the
Century Dictionary and Encyclopedia defines it as the state or condition of
being able; power or capacity to do or act in any relation; competence in any
occupation or field of action from the possession of capacity, skill, means, or
other qualification”.
In view of
the above, a student for example who desires to study Engineering needs look at
his performances in Mathematics, physics and chemistry and see from his
performance if he is able or need to make some adjustments. Likewise a student
who wishes to study any course of his interest equally needs to look at his
performances in the relevant subjects that the course demands and see if he is
able or need make some changes, otherwise one may end up biting off more than
one can chew and that’s a problem. To some extent, it is also advisable to pay
attention to ability in one recognized by others which one may not know or
despise, that is capable of making stand out and sure earns one a living.
In summary,
if one is still not clear of one’s ability or confused with multiple abilities
found in oneself, I recommend one meets a professional guidance counselor for
proper guidance and direction.
